The American University of Rome is excited to have esteemed professor, author and journalist Andrea di Robilant as its inaugural Writer-in-Residence. A celebrated voice in the world of creative nonfiction, di Robilant’s residency brings an exceptional opportunity for students, faculty, and the Roman community. Di Robilant studied History and International Affairs at Columbia University before beginning a career as a foreign correspondent. 


His books include: A Venetian Affair, Lucia, Irresistible North, Chasing the Rose, Autumn in Venice: Ernest Hemingway and His Last Muse, and This Earthly Globe: A Venetian Geographer and the Quest to Map the World.


Exclusive Workshop: "Creatures of the Lagoon: Notes on a New Work of Non-fiction"

In this small, interactive workshop, participants will get a glimpse into the construction of his acclaimed book This Earthly Globe: A Venetian Geographer and the Quest to Map the World. Di Robilant will share his approach when developing ideas, conducting archival research, and transforming them into powerful narratives. This workshop offers an unparalleled inside look at the process.


Public Lecture: "Venice Before Venice: A New Origin Story"

Capacity: Limited to 100 participants – Pre-registration is required

In his evening lecture, di Robilant will present a fresh perspective on the origins of Venice, challenging the traditional narrative of the city’s birth during the barbarian invasions. Drawing from archaeological research, di Robilant will reveal evidence suggesting that the Venetian lagoon was home to a vibrant Roman presence much earlier than previously thought. This talk promises to blend history with captivating storytelling, offering a thought-provoking exploration of Venice’s murky past.
