From English Literature to Global Advocacy: Sarah Lang's Journey in Writing and Humanitarian Work

Sarah Lang, an alumna of The American University of Rome, is currently forming a path that combines her passions for writing and her background in English literature. With a major in English Writing, Literature, and Publishing, paired with a minor in Italian Language and Culture, Sarah’s academic journey at AUR laid the foundation for a career rooted in humanitarian advocacy.

After graduating, Sarah’s career took several turns. First, she began as an English instructor and soon after, she transitioned to a swim instructor. However, her work with the Borgen Project has become a core part of her professional life.

Through an internship with the Borgen Project, Sarah raises awareness about global poverty by writing articles focused on politics and technology, with a special emphasis on foreign aid. The Borgen Project’s mission is vital, particularly in the face of recent political changes that have affected international aid programs. Sarah works on lobbying efforts, fundraising and often communicates with Congress members to support the legislation necessary for continued foreign aid to address global crises.

“I believe the work that the Borgen Project does is crucial right now,” Sarah said. “It’s a challenging time for foreign aid, especially after the restrictions on USAID imposed by the Trump administration and other political figures. Through writing, I hope to shed light on these issues and increase awareness about the importance of these programs.”

In reflecting on how her education at AUR shaped her career, Sarah emphasized the value of the critical skills she developed, particularly in reading comprehension and thoughtful investigation. "Reading comprehension is critical for both journalism and political involvement,” she explained. “It helps you draw meaningful conclusions from texts and research, which is so important when tackling complex global issues like poverty.”

Sarah also gives kudos to her professors at AUR for pushing her creatively and academically. “My professors were instrumental in my growth. Professor Pacor encouraged me to confront the material in creative ways, while Professor Colletta supported my experimental writing. Professor Andrea di Robilant constantly pushed me to refine my skills and pursue a professional path in editing,” she shared. The lessons and challenges she encountered in the classroom continue to influence her work today.

As an intern at the Borgen Project, Sarah has learned a great deal in practice, especially about SEO and best writing practices. Yet, it’s her passion for the cause that truly drives her. “I’ve always been motivated to create meaningful change, and this role gives me the platform to do so.”

Sarah Lang’s journey is a testament to the power of education especially when combined with passion, and practical experience.Through her work with the Borgen Project, she continues to advocate for global change, all while strengthening her skills as a writer and journalist.
