Dear Readers,

Through the pages of this edition, we invite you to join our contributors as they explore moments of realization and reflect on the passage of time.Whether it’s a place, a person, or a purpose that is thrust upon them by the perplexing human condition, our writers, poets, visual artists, and photographers display what it means to be present in spite of the inevitable turbulence we find ourselves enveloped by.

Spring REMUS Volume XVI is a glimpse into how AUR students navigate the complexity of power dynamics, grief, and the discomfort of the unknown.Through their work, we see how they find moments of stillness in it all.

Our writers and poets present their most intimate experiences, delving into the intricacies of adolescence, with narratives that explore tumultuous parental figures and the complexity of growing up. Each voice is distinct, yet together they explore how grief is a lifelong process that springs from relinquishing power and being thankful for life’s quieter moments.

Our visual artists share a broad variety of techniques–from oil portrait study and woodblock printmaking to delicate sketches and bold, abstract pops of color. Students paint their unique impressions of Sargent style and use their brush accordingly.

Meanwhile, our photographers transport us into the classic Roman street scenes, the studio of still life, and the breathtaking views in Egypt, offering glimpses into their vision of the world.

Although Rome is the home away from home for most of this year’s creatives, their work masterfully demonstrates how the introspective eye and attention to the present moment facilitate all together comforting awareness that defines the home found within one’s self.

It is our honor to present to you the sixteenth edition of REMUS.

Warmly,

Nalu Gruschkus and Winnie P. Kelley
